It works because Anthropic is in a Golden Age — more work than people, so there's nothing to fight over. AI-augmented engineers make the swarm model viable, and he predicts it becomes the industry standard. The catch: the swarm demands the death of the ego and ejects anyone who isn't a happy worker bee.

Yegge isn't reviewing Anthropic's products here — he's reverse-engineering its org chart, or rather its lack of one. Having talked to enough people inside, he thinks the way Anthropic coordinates work is the thing worth studying, and a preview of how software gets built everywhere.

The thesis

Yegge's claim isn't about Claude the model; it's about Anthropic the organism. The interesting output, he argues, is the coordination pattern — a large group of very smart people moving fast without the usual hierarchy, roadmaps, or turf. He's careful to frame this as a suspicion earned through reporting, not a press release.

What the hive mind actually is

The hive mind is a vibes-based operating system. Decisions emerge from collective consensus rather than being handed down; work streams are radically visible to everyone; planning horizons are tiny (weeks, not years); and the default response to a new idea is to build on it rather than block it. Employees describe the culture to Yegge as "Yes, and…" style improvisational theater — the improv rule where every offer is accepted and extended. The mechanism is fast prototyping plus continuous feedback, with the swarm self-correcting instead of a manager pre-approving.

Why it works: the Golden Age

Yegge's structural explanation is that Anthropic is living through a Golden Age — an intense multi-year burst of category creation and velocity. His load-bearing insight is a supply-and-demand rule about work itself: when there's more work than people, competition and politics simply have nothing to feed on. Nobody needs to build an empire or hoard headcount when there's more to do than anyone can reach. He says he has seen this movie before — at Amazon around 1998, and at Google before its own Golden Age ended — and that the crash always comes from the same reversal.

Google's decline, in his telling, began the moment work availability fell below headcount — that's when empire-building and internal politics filled the vacuum. The hive mind isn't a management theory that Anthropic invented; it's a behavior that abundance makes possible.

Why it's spreading: AI makes swarms cheap

The reason Yegge thinks this generalizes beyond one lucky company is AI-augmented productivity. When each engineer becomes 10–100× more effective, the amount of reachable work explodes — which manufactures exactly the surplus a Golden Age needs. In that regime, the coordination overhead of hierarchy stops paying for itself, and the swarm's short cycles win. Hence his prediction that the hive mind, not the org chart, is where software development is headed.

The cost of joining the swarm

This is the part most write-ups skip. Total transparency has a price: if everyone can see every work stream, everyone can also see every one of your dead ends. Yegge is blunt that the entry fee is psychological.

And the swarm is not a democracy of temperament. The same forces that make it fast also make it intolerant of anyone who won't play the "Yes, and…" game — a conformity pressure Yegge names directly.

The tension worth keeping

The sharpest idea in the essay is a tension Yegge leaves half-open. Normal companies get where they are by saying No — prioritizing, cutting scope, defending focus. The hive mind runs on the opposite reflex, "Yes, and…", which is only affordable while the Golden Age surplus lasts.

Here's the honest objection the piece invites: by Yegge's own definition, every Golden Age he cites eventually crashed when people came to outnumber work — Amazon's early boom, Google's pre-2011 run. The moment work gets scarce, "Yes, and…" becomes unaffordable and the old dynamics — politics, empire-building, the discipline of No — reassert. That makes the hive mind less a durable new operating system than a temporary property of abundance. Whether AI keeps the work-to-people ratio permanently tilted, or just delays the reversal, is the bet the whole prediction rests on — and Yegge asserts it more than he proves it.
