Automated People Mover
You have almost certainly ridden one without noticing. The rubber-floored box that carries you between airport terminals, doors chiming shut with nobody at the controls, is an automated people mover (APM) — small-scale automated guideway transit (AGT): fully driverless, short-haul transit locked to a dedicated guideway. Think of it as a horizontal elevator that happens to travel sideways.
How it works
An APM runs on an exclusive guideway — usually elevated concrete or a shallow trench — that no car, pedestrian, or cross-traffic can ever touch. That total separation is the whole trick: because nothing can stray onto the path, a computer can run the vehicles instead of a driver. Trains are small (often one to four cars), stops are close together, and the route is short and fixed. Airport terminal shuttles and compact downtown loops are the classic homes for the technology.
The propulsion split
APMs divide sharply on what actually pushes the vehicle, and this is where the family tree gets interesting:
- Self-propelled — each vehicle carries its own electric motors and rides on rubber tyres or steel wheels. The onboard-motor camp includes most large airport trains, Miami's Metromover, the Detroit People Mover, and — as the big-city cousin scaled up to a full metro — Vancouver's SkyTrain.
- Cable-drawn — the "cable liner" or cable-propelled APM. Here the cars carry no engine at all; a fixed motor at one end reels a continuous rope that hauls the vehicles along, exactly like a ski lift laid flat.
Why driverless buys short headways
Removing the driver does more than cut a salary. With computer control on a sealed guideway, vehicles can follow each other far more tightly and safely than a human would dare, so headways — the gap between arrivals — shrink to a minute or two. You do not consult a timetable; you walk up and the next car is already easing in. That "always-just-arriving" rhythm is exactly the horizontal-elevator feel, and it is why airports lean on APMs to move dense pulses of passengers between concourses without anyone waiting long.
Where you meet one
Two habitats dominate. The first is the airport, connecting terminals, satellite concourses, and rental-car centers over distances too far to walk but too short for a train. The second is the compact downtown loop — Metromover and the Detroit People Mover both thread elevated circuits through a city core, stitching together garages, offices, and transit hubs. In every case the promise is the same: no driver, no schedule to memorize, no crossings to fear — just a small automated box that shows up, opens, and goes.
