Cable Car

grip the rope, release to stop

A cable car carries no engine. The power lives in a steel rope sliding endlessly through a slot in the street, and the car simply decides, moment to moment, whether to hold on or let go.

How it works

The cable never stops. Beneath the roadway, in a narrow slot between the rails, a wire rope runs in a continuous loop at a steady 9.5 mph (15.3 km/h), driven from a central powerhouse. Each car reaches down through the slot with a grip — essentially a giant pair of pliers worked by a lever. The gripman pulls the lever to clamp the moving cable, and the car is dragged along at cable speed.

To stop, he eases the lever open, releasing the rope, and applies the car's brakes. There is no throttle and no reverse:

Because the cable runs at one constant speed, a cable car can't sprint on the flat and can't crawl up a grade. It grips at 9.5 mph, or it doesn't move at all.

Why San Francisco, 1873

Andrew Smith Hallidie tested the first line — the Clay Street Hill Railroad — in San Francisco in 1873. The city was the perfect problem: hills too steep for horse-drawn cars to climb safely, and a growing public disgust at the cruelty of working horses to death on those grades. A rope buried in the street didn't tire, didn't slip on wet cobbles, and didn't care how steep the hill got. Within a couple of decades, cable lines had spread to dozens of cities.

The last of its kind

Electric streetcars — cheaper, faster, needing no powerhouse or buried loop of cable — swept the technology away almost everywhere by the early 20th century. San Francisco is the sole survivor: the only manually operated street cable-car system left in the world, and a rare National Historic Landmark that actually moves, still carrying passengers on the exact principle Hallidie proved in 1873.

Ancestor of the aerial grip

The releasable grip is the cable car's most durable idea. Being able to clamp onto and let go of a continuously moving rope is precisely what lets modern detachable gondolas and chairlifts run their haul rope at full speed while slowing to a walking pace inside the station to load.

Contrast the funicular, which bolts its cars permanently to the cable and so can never stop mid-line — the whole rope moves or nothing does. The cable car's trick is the grip mechanism: the seed of every aerial detachable grip that followed.
