Flåm Railway
In about an hour the Flåmsbana falls off a mountain. It leaves the high, bare plateau at Myrdal and corkscrews down to sea level at Flåm — 866 metres of descent in barely 20 kilometres — and it does the whole thing on plain steel wheels gripping plain steel rail. No cable. No cog. Just friction, nerve, and five sets of brakes.
The line
The Flåm Line is a 20.2-kilometre branch off the Bergen Line. It splits away at Myrdal, a windswept junction station at 866 metres, and threads down the Flåm valley to the village of Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord — an arm of the mighty Sognefjord. Top to bottom it drops from alpine snow country to a fjord quay you could nearly touch the water from. It is standard gauge (1,435 mm), electrified, and today runs almost entirely as a passenger showpiece.
Steep — but no rack
Here is what makes railway people stop and stare. Over most of its length the Flåmsbana holds a gradient of about 5.5 percent, or 1 in 18, which makes it one of the world's steepest standard-gauge adhesion railways — the steepest in Europe. That word adhesion is the whole story: the train climbs and, more nervously, descends using nothing but the grip of wheel on rail. Most lines this steep cheat with a toothed rail and a gear that bites into it. The Flåm Line refuses.

Five brakes and hand-dug tunnels
Going up a 1:18 grade is a question of power. Coming down it, loaded with tourists, is a question of never, ever losing control — so the Flåmsbana is built around redundancy. Its trains carry five independent braking systems, each one on its own capable of stopping the train. Any single failure is meant to be a shrug, not a catastrophe.
The route itself was clawed out of the rock. There are about 20 tunnels, and most of them were dug by hand — a metre or so of progress a month, crews boring through the mountainside with little more than muscle and dynamite. Construction dragged across the 1920s and 1930s.
The ride today
Every Flåm run makes one theatrical pause. At Kjosfossen the train halts on a viewing platform beside a thundering waterfall, everyone piles onto the deck with cameras, and the spray drifts over the crowd. It is unabashed tourist choreography, and it works — the Flåmsbana is one of Norway's most-visited attractions, a bucket-list ride precisely because it does the impossible-looking thing on ordinary rails.
That is the quiet argument the Flåm Line makes. Give the engineers enough switchbacks, enough tunnels, and enough brakes, and steel-on-steel adhesion can go places everyone assumed needed a cog. Slower than a rack line, yes — but standard-gauge, connected straight into the national network, and beautiful the whole way down.
