Gondola Lift
A gondola lift moves people the way a bicycle chain moves links: dozens of small cabins clamped onto one endless loop of wire rope, all flowing in the same direction, all the time.
How it works
The whole system hangs from a single steel cable — hence monocable. That one rope does double duty: it holds the cabins up and drags them along, strung in a giant loop between two terminals and carried over towers in between. At one end a motor spins a bullwheel — a large grooved sheave — that pulls the rope around continuously at a steady speed. The cabins never stop and the drive never reverses; you just step into whatever cabin is passing through the station. This layout is usually shortened to MDG: monocable detachable gondola.
The detachable grip
The trick that makes it pleasant to ride is that the cabins let go of the rope. Each cabin hangs from a spring-loaded clamp; on the open line it bites the moving cable and travels at full speed, but as it enters the terminal the grip is forced open and the cabin transfers onto a slow conveyor of tires that walks it through the station at a stroll for loading. On the way out it accelerates back up to line speed and re-clamps. That is the detachable grip, and it is the whole reason a modern lift can run fast and board gently.
Speed and capacity
A monocable gondola typically cruises around 6 m/s — roughly 21 km/h, held down partly by the sway a single rope allows in wind. What it lacks in speed it makes up in throughput: with cabins of about 2 to 15 people spaced seconds apart, a line moves on the order of 2,000–3,600 people per hour per direction — a continuous river of capacity from one fixed engine.
Where you'll ride one
Gondolas grew up on ski hills — quiet, weatherproof, terrain-blind — but the same qualities turned them into serious city transit. Because a rope flies straight over ravines and traffic that no bus or rail line can climb, gondolas now form part of the public network in several cities:
- Medellín, Colombia — the Metrocable, fully integrated with the metro fare and timetable, reaching hillside barrios.
- La Paz / El Alto, Bolivia — Mi Teleférico, the backbone of the city's transit, climbing thousands of feet of Andean altitude.
- London — the Thames crossing formerly branded the Emirates Air Line, an urban river hop.
Not an aerial tramway
It's easy to lump every cable that flies into one bucket, but a gondola and an aerial tramway are opposites in rhythm. A gondola is many small cabins circulating continuously in a loop. A tramway is one or two large cabins shuttling back and forth, counterbalancing each other on a fixed track cable. A steady parade of little cars all moving one way is a gondola; one big box going up while another comes down is a tramway.
